this week’s style icon:
Finally went to one of those shows under the BQE this weekend and now I’m obsessed with everyone in TV on the Radio.
what I’m clicking:
Remembrance of scents past | Cigarettes are cool | Making a living from class action lawsuits | A no-drama commune | Existential dread in Paris | The last of the private dining rooms | How the slop machine affects the economy |m Recreating a Waldorf Astoria that nobody remembers | A swamp rat slaughter on the bayou | Dispatch from the ICE job expo | Recklessness and repercussions at an infamous surf break | The mass shooter influencers
what i’m wanderlusting:
I have been fixated on Chiapas for a while, and now it’s at the top of my Mexico list. Who’s been? Who wants to plan a trip with me?
what i’m listening to:
I get a certain voyeuristic joy from Yowei Shaw’s new podcast, called Proxy, which is basically her mediating a therapy session between somebody who has a VERY specific problem and a professional who can help them.
what i’m eating & drinking:
I’m not huge on dining alone BUT I do love sitting at the bar for dinner somewhere cool. One of my favorite meals of my summer travels was a solo meal at Pharaoh in Athens. Groovy soundtrack, great bar seats, delicious updated Greek classics, lots of good people watching.
what i’m watching:
This whole time I thought 28 Days Later and 28 Days (the rehab film starring Sandra Bullock) were the same thing, and in my memory I was like “oh yeah, the zombie film where Sandra Bullock goes to rehab.” They are two different films. 28 Days Later, which I watched for the first time a few weeks ago, is maybe one of my top ten movies of all time. I can’t remember the last time a movie made me feel all those feelings. (28 Weeks Later and 28 Years Later, which are sequels to the zombie movie and not the Sandra Bullock movie, are ok, but they can’t come close to the original).
what i’m recommending:
I did not realize until recently how versatile a silk robe is. I got one from Kayll this winter that has made it into every suitcase I’ve packed since. It’s great for a beach/pool/spa coverup, but you can also wear it as a jacket over a slinky dress, or with a t-shirt and jeans. I have also used it on the plane as a lightweight blanket, and it packs up into basically nothing.
what i’m coveting:
When I was in Rome this summer I accidentally tried on a pair of these $500 heart-shaped sunglasses and unfortunately they looked really good on me so now I can’t stop thinking about them.
what i’m reading:
I went on a Mediterranean cruise this summer, so the obvious choice was Circe by Madeline Miller. I wouldn’t quite recommend it, but I enjoyed it (and I felt quite pleased with myself for reading a book that was outside my normal genre). I would definitely not read it if you’ve never read the Odyssey.
My other destination-based read of the trip was The Destroyers by Christopher Bollen, who I consider a sort of modern-day Patricia Highsmith. He basically writes the perfect vacation read - gripping without being trashy, fun but not embarrassing to be seen with. I highly recommend picking up one of his books if you happen to be traveling to Luxor, Cairo, Venice, or the North Fork.
