what i’m wanderlusting:
what i’m listening to:
The Telepathy Tapes podcast. I was down the rabbit hole after the first episode, though I do think it could be encouraging a lot of false hope for parents. But I want to believe! (Even after reading the takedown in NY mag.)
what i’m watching:
Aliens (#2) was a movie that has haunted me for years because I watched it when I was way too young (I think around Newt’s age or maybe a little younger). This year, Haley and I decided to watch all of them in chronological order, which I highly recommend:
Prometheus, 2012 (This is my favorite one, maybe because it has the least amount of alien)
Alien: Covenant, 2017 (A direct sequel to Prometheus - I could watch more movies in this storyline)
Alien, 1979 (The OG! Also, why isn’t Sigourney Weaver’s character a classic Halloween costume?)
Alien Romulus, 2024 (This is the newest one that sort of introduces a random new storyline - but it’s still good)
Aliens, 1986 (The source of my childhood trauma, but the scary part for me wasn’t the aliens it was that Newt was ALL ALONE in space. This was also around the time when I first learned about black holes. I remember being VERY STRESSED about the fate of her doll when I was a child)
Alien 3, 1992 (To be honest, we didn’t actually watch this one because everyone on Reddit says it’s horrifying and even the director has apparently denounced it)
Alien Resurrection (Strange and sad, maybe just stop after Aliens and pretend they all live happily ever after)
what i’m recommending:
The prairie/milkmaid trend has been utterly exhausted at this point, but I’m a basic b and I still love Doen. I have this cotton poplin dress in black and it’s a permanent suitcase staple for me (it runs big and it’s very stretchy, so order a size down). I’m currently considering this lace number, but I actually can’t think of a single place to wear it.
what i’m eating & drinking:
My friend Izzy was in town recently, and we lucked out with a last-minute Sunday evening table at Monkey Bar. It’s now my favorite place in midtown: old school glamour, ice-cold martinis, excellent people watching. Everything we ordered (wedge salad, burger, crab cakes) was perfect, but next time, I’ll just get an order of the potato pancakes with a side of caviar.
what i’m coveting:
I finally ate at Zimmi’s (insanely delicious, yay Maxime!!!) and while I was there, I used the Loewe oregano soap they had in the bathroom, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I need it in my life. (And the candle! And the lotion!)
what i’m writing:
Why you should plan a solo trip to the honeymoon capital of the world.
what i’m bookclubbing:
We’ll be discussing My Best Friend’s Exorcism in July!
what i’m reading:
Tony Tulathimutte
I was so disturbed by this book that I had to talk to my therapist about it. A cringeworthy bit of social horror that’s truly the unsexiest book about sex I have ever read. I can’t recommend it, but I couldn’t put it down.
Liz Moore
One of my favorite books of the year so far, but I think you’re only going to like it if you went to camp. (I did; it was fucking weird and I called my mom to pick me up early.)
Nathan Hill
This book about aging hipsters was funny and sad and felt VERY true. It’s like 200 pages too long and the plot is very rambling, but I actually really appreciated all the tangential rants.
Torrey Peters
Not quite a novel and not quite a book of short stories, but this was so delightfully weird. I loved it and can’t wait for more of her books. (I also think she seems cool and interesting.)
Ada Calhoun
As a novel, it’s meh. As a memoir, it’s juicy AF and unputdownable.
Jacqueline Harpman
This book was just ok (I think the French are maybe just not great at books because I am consistently disappointed? Could this possibly be true? Real question. I have not read Proust). But I can’t stop thinking about it. I have so many questions! I would like to discuss theories!
Claire Keegan
Very sweet and immersive, but if you haven’t read it already, I’d save it for Christmastime.
