this week’s style icon:
For my birthday a few weeks ago, Haley and I went to see one of the last performances of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. It was maybe the best performance I’ve seen on Broadway and I’m devastated it’s closing (but the London show is still on!). I especially loved this emcee costume.
what I’m clicking:
The messy world of junk journaling | Sydney Sweeney and the uggo police | How Wikipedia survives in a post-fact world | A searchable archive of New York City’s streets | How music criticism lost its edge | The orgasm expert who ended up on trial | The reenchanted world | Tripping alone
what i’m wanderlusting:
My mind keeps wandering to Lamu and the Peponi Hotel. Possibly the tropical destination that’s at the top of my bucket list right now.
what i’m listening to:
I have been slowly working my way through a rewatch of the O.C. and the MUSIC!!! It really transports you right to 2005. I highly recommend an O.C. soundtrack re-listen to remember a time without smartphones.
what i’m eating & drinking:
My last few visits to Stissing House have been kind of meh, but when I went last Sunday it was perfect. Highlight was the scallops in an herby butter broth that we slurped out of the shells, but I also can’t stop thinking about the fish pie, which was like a shepherds pie but with halibut instead of beef? Absolutely fantastic slop. But also, you have to get the plate of Jake’s Gouda and the coconut cake. (And go on a school night for better service and vibes.)
what i’m watching:
This weekend we went to a Buddhist retreat center in the Catskills for a screening of The Spirit of Tatá, a documentary about an Amazonian shaman trying to preserve indigenous culture. So beautiful, so poignant.
what i’m recommending:
Uniqlo turtlenecks have been a wardrobe staple for the past decade, but I’m just now finding out that they have a cashmere blend version?!?!? I bought one, and then immediately bought three more.
what i’m coveting:
This summer on a little European vacation whim I bought a $10 fake gold ankle bracelet with a bunch of smiley faces on it. It brought me unspeakable joy. It has since tarnished and lost all but one smiley charm, so I am going by the “if you lose it, buy it cheaper; if you break it, buy it better” philosophy. There’s no way I’m spending $2k on an ankle bracelet, but I am eyeing the Etsy version.
what i’m writing about:
My summer jaunt aboard the Ritz Carlton Yacht for Oltre magazine.
what i’m reading:
Two really great pieces of gossip: the first is Great Black Hope by Rob Franklin, which is my ideal sort of book. It’s about the secret lives of glamorous fuckups, but there’s also a murder mystery.
The second is Elizabeth Gilbert’s tremendous and disturbing new memoir All the Way to the River, in which she recounts the time that she and her best friend-turned-lover decided to go on a drug-fueled spiral that almost ended in attempted murder. The excerpt convinced me we needed to read it for book club (tomorrow evening near Union Square, message me for details!) and the reviews are hilariously spot on. I can’t get enough of the discourse with this one.
