this week’s style icon:
Julia Butterfly Hill, who lived in a tree for 738 days.
what I’m clicking:
The Gen X career meltdown | Michelle Zauner’s succes almost destroyed her | The midlife reckoning | The end of children | What aging is like for people without kids | Desperate for Botox | My group chat is ruing my life | An influencer’s ghostwriting drama | The ubiquity of the “shoppy” shop | The case of the missing Elvis | The 2,500-mile journey to visit my brother in prison | How prescription drugs get their names | The manosphere takes center stage | A neo-tantric cult is (surprise) accused of crimes | The questions ChatGPT shouldn’t answer | Notes on a last-minute safari | Rewilding your attention
what i’m wanderlusting:
Fantasizing about returning to my favorite beach town on earth.
what i’m listening to:
This Lucinda Williams x Charles Lloyd album that’s perfect for a road trip.
what i’m eating & drinking:
While I was researching a story about natural wine in New York City for Vogue, I ate at Chambers, which I think is probably the most underrated restaurant in the city. Go on a weeknight, eat at the bar or the chef’s counter, and ask them what they’re pouring by the glass.
what i’m watching:
I have finally gotten around to finishing the My Brilliant Friend adaptation on HBO. They randomly switched actors for the last season, which I found to be really distracting, but it was incredible. Haley did not read the books and loved this series, so you don’t have to slog through all four books if you don’t want to. (But I highly recommend them. I was gripped from the start, but for people who have trouble getting into them, I’ve heard you should start with book 2, then go back to book 1, then read 3 and 4.)
what i’m coveting:
Trying to convince myself I *don’t* need a new glittery bikini.
what i’m recommending:
My friend Isabel and I were having a real Fear and Loathing moment in La Paz a few weeks ago and ended up spending $100 on handfuls of shark tooth necklace souvenirs. Everyone we’ve given them to has said it makes them feel really cool, so I highly recommend getting yourself and everyone you know a shark tooth necklace so you can feel really cool, too. Here are some kind of glam ones, but you can’t go wrong with the tooth on a string kind either.
what i’m bookclubbing:
Very excited to discuss Rejections on Wednesday in Brooklyn.
what i’m reading:
Christopher Bollen
I want you to read this book so we can talk about how weird it is.
Emily St. John Mandel
I love everything this woman writes, and this one felt different from the Station Eleven universe (but still cinematic in its own way). I would love to watch this movie.
Dolly Alderton
Another 10/10 from my favorite rom-com writer. I need her to write a new book every year and I need all of them to be made into movies.
R.F. Kuang
I wanted to like this more than I did. The premise is so rich, but the book just fell a little flat for me. (And the morality was tedious and heavy-handed.)
Casey McQuiston
The absolute best book to bring on a sexy summer jaunt to the Mediterranean.
Joel Dicker
An unsolved murder in a fancy Swiss hotel? I should have loved this, but this translation was incredibly stupid and disappointing. Don’t waste your time.
Maud Ventura
I think I hate translations or maybe I just hate French writers. This was shockingly boring.
